So my son, a.k.a. ten-month-old pet rat (Bilirubin), LOVES fish. I'm always trying to introduce new foods into his diet for variety, and I discovered last week that he is absolutely apenuts over tuna. After further experimentation, I discovered that he likes not only vegetarian protein that I eat, like garden burgers, tuna and salmon, but also chicken and steak. Who knew?
Are these foods healthy for rats in moderation? I've heard before that rats should not have meat, but I've read conflicting information as well. Also, I know that some fish does have mercury in it, and I don't know how safe that is for a pet of such a small size to consume. I'd keep him on a vegetarian diet, but he loves the meat so much that I figure if it's healthy, I'll give it to him :).

I've heard not to feed them red meat like beef, pork or lamb. Poultry is fine as long as it's not their main food source. Rats actually need a lot more protein than some people realize. I like to give mine lots of legumes like edamame, black beans and chickpeas (all cooked of course never feed your rat uncooked grains/legumes). I give them a little chicken babyfood twice a week and they love it!
