I've not had rats since my daughter was born and was just moved back into a preschool-aged classroom at work, which gave me the opportunity to buy a couple. I found a local breeder who sounded like she knew what she was doing, had good reviews, and rats available. She did give me the cost for a single rat, which surprised me (if I was a breeder I would only sell them in pairs) and when I met her to get them she said they hadn't been handled much (contradicting her claims on her FB page, as well as reviews I'd read) but I still felt this was a better option than getting them from a pet store, and those that I've gotten from them in the past were easily tamed. At any rate, they're very timid, which I'm fine putting in the time for, but they also didn't eat or drink anything the first 24 hrs I had them. I messaged her to find out what type of food she'd been giving them and found out that she was feeding them CEREAL!!! Fruit Loops, Reese's Peanut Butter Puffs, and Cheerios. I'm appalled! In my excitement I overlooked some red flags and didn't ask all of the questions I should have, so as upset as I am with her, I'm equally mad at myself, and now have no idea how to get them to transition from their high sugar/crap diet to pellets & fresh fruits & veggies, so if anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate the help 😔
