I'm new at this, and the first food I got was the stuff the PetsMart girl told me to get, Nutriphase Gold Mouse and Rat formula. I found that it had alot of seeds and stuff in it tho, so I got another type, called Versele-Laga Prestige Rat Nature. Its made in Belgium, so I can't read the ingredients list since it's not in English, but the girl at this small petstore near my place told me its really good (she seemed to know more about it). Can anybody let me know if this food is ok for them?

As to your food you have, i have never heard of it, so cant answer your question really, sorry. Ask ten different rat owners what they feed their rats and you will get ten differrent answers. There are many different foods out there suitable for rats, some use wilko`s own brand, some use pets at home nuggets, and others Alpha herbal rabbit mix or even mr johnsons rabbit mix. While these are all suitable and the rats love them, i am a firm believer that you should use what works best for you and your rats and what is easily available to you. you will no doubt hear about the famous " shunamite diet " i used to use this, but ran into a few problems along the way so switched to something else. Welcome to the forum by the way, & big scritches to your ratties.

swiftvalley is right and i feed my rats different things depending on how they are enjoying them. You where right to choose a food with very few nuts as protien can give rats skin problems. Ive had a lok on teh petsmart website and i personally would steer clear of the Ra foods they sell as they are full of artificial colours and all sorts of rubbish. I tend to give my rats a mixed food one week and a complete food the next so that on teh mixed weeks they can eat their favourite pieces and on the complete weeks they only get a single type of food which has all the vitamins and minerals they need.
Do you suppliment your rats diets with fruit and Veg. I find mine enjoy kale so much and love boiled eggs although expect a fight if you give them on of those. Avoid acidic foods and spicey things and your rats should do fine.
Btw the company who make the food you are currently using has a website in english so you mabey able to get a ingredients list from their.

Oh thanks, thats great! I do give them fruit and veg, usually every day or every second day I cut up bits of apple, grape, carrot, avocado, lettuce and a bit of cheese and whatever else i may have (just not tomatoes or oranges) and give that to them and they really like it. I got these dried fruits/veg as well for them, its got banana chips and mango bits and coconut, etc in it. Oh and they love Vegetable Thins crackers, altho I don't know how good those are for us, let alone the ratties...
