I suppose it depends on what wood the shavings are made of, and how much dust they contain.

Their are certain woods which are dangerous to small animals mostly pines i think although im not sure do any of you more experienced rat keepers know. I dont think dust is too much of a problem ok loads of it would be bad but a little in the shaving is inevitable. If you have a big big cage with several levels you rats wont spend too much time on th ebottom anyhow becasue they enjoy sleeping in high places so wont be affected by the dust.

Rabbits are far more susceptable to respitory problems than rats are in regards to shavings, i dont hear anyone moaning about not keeping rabbits on them Besides, there is no actual Scientific proof in the uk, that shavings can cause respitory problems. People should be far more concerned about what theyre feeding their rats as opposed to what theyre being kept on. I feel that the feeding is much more important. I personally have kept my rats on Bedmax shavings for the last 12 years, and i have never encountered a problem with any of my rats i have had or bred here. I will continue to use them as this works best for me and my rats, but its personal choice at the end of the day.

the thing is, you don't know if a rat that gets a bad chest on sawdust wouldn't have got one anyway.
I think there is a lot of unnecessary scaremongering

i agree i can understand the better safe than sorry ideal but in this case i dont think that their is any real evidence that it can greatly increase the chance of respitory infections
