Hammock are expensive essentials for ratties and teh fact that mine enjoy to chew them to bits makes it a costly maintenance bill so i have started making my own.
You will need
Tea Towel you can get three from a pound shop for a pound
string; make sure its cotten
some large paperclips
and last but not least a eyelet puncher and you should get eyelets with it; available from woolworths for about £4 and prob from a diy shop.
1: so take the tea towel and fold it in half lengthways
2: make a small hole in each corner
3: insert a eyelet into a hole
4: Use the punchr on the eyelet this will make the eyelet fold over the material at both sides and reinforce the hole.
5: do this for all four holes
6: tread string through each hole
7: add the paperclips
8: attach to your cage and allow the rat to enjoy
Its easy you can make one in about 10mins and for next to nothing after the inatial cost of about a tenner. I reakon it costs about 50p a hammock and thats with three tea towels for £1

i bought a metre of faux fur from spotlight on sale for about $5 and made about the same thing as your sling but with a little pocket on top for them to go under they love it and havent chewed any of it up yet which is odd i think seeing as they are always in it
